Poetry-in-the-Schools Program (PITS) Description
Directed by Beth Huddleston
In September 2001, the Poetry Society of Virginia launched the Poetry in the Schools Program to provide enrichment activities that advance students’ understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of poetry. Many PSV members have volunteered their expertise to schools (elementary through university levels) through a variety of activities. These include, but are not limited, to the following:
*after-school poetry clubs *poetry workshops *poetry competitions *poetry readings *writing conferences * Real Virginia Poets Program
The PITS Objectives are as follows:
*Objective 1: Identify existing programs to use as models for other schools and universities;
*Objective 2: Provide teacher workshops and inservice opportunities that use poetry to foster both critical and creative thinking skills in the classroom and to ensure that these efforts are consistent with statewide SOL objectives;
*Objective 3: Introduce teachers and students to the work and writing practices of professional poets through Writers-in-the-Schools programs;
*Objective 4: Promote the Poetry Society of Virginia's Student Poetry Competition sponsored yearly by the organization.
All PSV members who are interested in participating in this program may contact Beth Huddleston by email bethhud@shentel.net for further information.
