Programs for Educators and Students
The Poetry Society of Virginia has several existing and projected programs of interest to educators. One of these programs sponsors the Academy of American Poets prizes to higher-education students. Another sponsors a poetry contest for grades 1 through 12 and undergraduate college students. In addition to these two options, there are projects and programs aimed at providing help in developing awareness of and interest in reading and writing at every level.
1. The Academy of American Poets College Prize: The Poetry Society of Virginia has endowed this prize, given annually to a college student and administered by the Academy of American Poets, in five Virginia institutions of higher learning, and plans more endowments.
2. The Annual Student Contest: This contest, divided into categories ranging from Grades 1-2 through Undergraduate College, provides money awards for poems written by students. The contest is free of charge for students.
3. The Annual Awards Presentation: Held in April each year, this is the awards presentation for the Annual contest; winners who attend read their winning poems. The presentation is free of charge. Optional luncheon is available for a fee.
4. Poetry In The Schools Speakers: Poets in The Poetry Society Of Virginia are available to visit classrooms, read their works and discuss poetry with students. Individual speakers determine fees for speaking.
5. Real Virginia Poets: This program provides available poets to become involved with a classroom activity on a one-on-one basis. A student is able to correspond with a published poet by telephone, mail or email, meeting SOL requirements in a differentiated fashion. This is an excellent opportunity to provide extended learning for students with differentiated learning styles and special interests. The Real Virginia Poets program is free of charge.
6. Poets Laureate DVD: An interactive DVD, featuring interviews with, and readings by, four former Poets Laureate of the Commonwealth, sells for $15.00. Instructional books for optimal use of the DVD are available.
7. Student Membership: Student and classroom memberships in The Poetry Society of Virginia are available at discounted dues.
For a list of available poets, please contact Beth Huddleston, P.I.T.S. Chair bethhud@shentel.net.
