Our July 2007 Email Cup Contest is over and judged by Warren Harris. The poets were required to write a poem of no more than twelve lines, with the first line taken from the first line of any poem, nursery rhyme or doggerel, then continuing with their poem, keeping any rhyme scheme or rhythm intact. There were twenty-eight entries.
First prize goes to Landon Elswick of Fredericksburg. He will soon receive his mug with his poem and award notice on it. Here is Landon’s poem:
We No Fools
The Merit Scholars. Seven at the Public Library
We real cool. We No fools. We
Work late. We Fight fate. We
Shun sin. We Kin grin. We
Grad June. We Fly soon.

First Honorable Mention goes to Jane Ellen Glasser of Norfolk.
Japanese Cherry Blossom
“Oh, to love what is lovely, and will not last!” Such abundance of a nothing weight!___ each blossom fully opened yet holding on. Now a squirrel dances, thin limb to limb and the whole tree shivers. And now a cardinal alights in his swashbuckler’s habit to breakfast on a delicacy. Tomorrow the wind will begin it’s scattering work and it will rain pink petals for a week. As reverie follows bliss, green will follow pink. And green can live for months on memory.

Second Honorable Mention goes to Darlene Richardson of Arlington.
Before he went to live with owls and bats, his days were spent in idle chat and ramblings with alley cats as he foraged through the neighbor’s trash in search of his long lost wayward hat___ a derby, black ___ a hint of panache and believed to be worth a bit of cash.

Third Honorable Mention goes to Janice and Donald Egry of Verbank, New York.
A Frosty Morning
The way a crow Walks ‘cross the lawn When Fall winds blow And the leaves have gone
Gives me a
A lighter heart, As snowflakes drift On a day we must part.
Congratulations to Landon, Jane Ellen, Darlene, Janice and Donald. Good work all!
