The Poetry Society of Virginia: Membership Information & Application

PSV MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION & NEW MEMBER APPLICATION

WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN THE POETRY SOCIETY OF VIRGINIA?
You’re already a poet. You’ve probably been published before. You may even belong to a local poetry writers’ group. So why join the Poetry Society? I think there are many reasons.

· To enjoy the comradery, the joie de vivre of being with other poets. You will meet new friends at our meetings, at sponsored local events, and on the internet as we develop online activities (we already have done round robin poem writing and contests by email.)
· You can enter our annual contest without a fee! Maybe you’ll win prize money in one of our twenty-five categories. A few of the categories are for members only.
· To support and learn from our web site, www.PoetrySocietyofVirginia.org.
· To support and learn from our newsletter, A Common Wealth of Poetry.
· To actively participate in the Society’s efforts to encourage excellence in the writing of poetry and a greater appreciation of poetry. There are opportunities for you to help us build a better and more responsive Society, just raise your hand and volunteer!

THE POETRY SOCIETY OF VIRGINIA HAS A PROUD HISTORY.
Founded in 1923 at the College of William and Mary, it is among the oldest state poetry organizations in the nation. We have over three hundred forty members and growing. Although most of our members are from Virginia, about fifteen percent live in other states.

We are organized in five regions with a Vice President for each region. We have at least one meeting in each region each year, and a three day festival meeting in May in Williamsburg. Our regional meetings typically include an open reading, a luncheon and a program, usually a guest reader.

The Society Newsletter, A Common Wealth of Poetry, is published at least six times a year and is mailed about two weeks prior to our meetings. The newsletter has information about the upcoming meeting and other events. Selected members’ poetry is published in the newsletter. Often there are information articles.

The Society web site, www.PoetrySocietyofVirginia.org has many features. Our newsletter is posted, including information about upcoming meetings. There are essays about aspects of the craft of poetry. There is information from members and links to their sites.

Some of our members with access to the internet enjoy special contests periodically. The winner gets a mug with the award announcement on one side and the winning poem on the other. See the web site for those poems. We also do round robin poetry writing. Several are posted on the web site.

The Society’s annual poetry writing contest has a deadline date of January 19, Edgar Allen Poe’s birthday. Poets from Virginia and other states compete for cash prizes in twenty-five categories. In addition, there are categories for elementary, middle and high school students, and undergraduate collage students. Brochures for the contest are available after October 1 on our web site or in the newsletter.
