From our President
Greetings, and Best Wishes to everyone!
One of our Big Annual Events has just been completed, and another is coming this month! If you miss this year’s Poetry Festival, you’ll truly regret it. If you haven’t made your reservations, I strongly recommend that you do so right away. We have some wonderful programs planned, and some important decisions to make at the Annual Meeting!
The Featured Poets, Tim Lewis and Luisa Igloria, have wonderful new work for us to hear. I’m looking forward eagerly to their presentations. Ron Smith’s and Henry Hart’s seminars, and workshops from new presenters will provide a fresh look at some of our ideas about writing poetry. I’ll also have the honor of providing a workshop this year.
I’m especially eager to see the Theater Event prepared by Bob Arthur. Anyone who had the privilege of seeing “A Chesapeake Celebration” knows what Bob is capable of delivering, using the best work from his own repertoire and those of other poets. Don’t know about you, but I can’t wait!
As usual, the Annual Meeting will include election of officers for the next year, and we have a recommendation for a dues increase, applicable to Life Membership. This is the only category in which dues have not been increased. We shall also need to address the choice of a Virginia poet as reader/award winner for the Ellen Anderson Reading. The consensus at the Executive Committee meeting was that the membership be involved in the choice of the reader. Therefore, put on your thinking cap and be ready to provide your nomination for a Virginia poet to receive this honor. All nominations by members will be taken into account, in the final decision.
On a personal note, I should like to thank you once again for the faith you have shown in me, and for the tremendous honor and privilege of being able to serve as your president for another year. I am greatly encouraged by the enthusiasm and cooperation that has been demonstrated by our members, in encouraging and promoting the art and pleasure of poetry. Thanks to all the wonderful poets who have graced our meetings with your amazing work, whether as presenters or in open readings. Thanks to all the “audience” members who do not choose to write poetry, but whose enjoyment and encouragement make writing worthwhile. Thanks to the Executive Committee, who have worked so hard to keep our plans, dreams and projects on an even keel, especially in the face of the nation’s financial condition. Thanks to the contest sponsors, who support our best-known effort. Thanks to all the committee members, who make things happen in order and on time, with repeatedly great results. God bless you all.
Thanks, especially, to Ed Lull, who has served as our Festival Chair for the past ten years, and now expects to “retire” from that position. You and your committee have done so much for us, Ed. You’ll be a hard act to follow, and we’ll never forget your wonderful vision and skill in providing us with a magnificent event.
Good luck and blessings to everyone. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Festival!

The Sign-Up Date for this year’s festival is rapidly approaching (May 8). Do not let this program pass you by. Super seminars and workshops fill the days, and the Friday Banquet, and Bob Arthur’s Saturday Evening production: Roses So Red and Lilies So Fair make the evening quite special. This is Ed Lull’s tenth and final year of hosting the festival; Don’t Miss It!

Members for whom we do not have an email address on file will receive dues notices by post card. In addition they may note the expiration date of their membership on the mailing label of their newsletter and send in dues early. $35 for one year, $ 50 for two and $65 for three. ________________________________________________
Poem by Member
Dawn Michal Mahgerefteh
Early morning mist tingles the reddening skies in the horizon, whirls laden clouds into a patch of clear-blue, settles on dawn-tinted roses spilled over fences and wall gardens, ‘til the wilting heat of mid- summer reels the rooster’s call. ________________________________________________
