The 2020 Poetry Society of Virginia Student Contest

All 2020 poetry contests, both for students and for adults, are now closed. A series of tragic unforeseen circumstances has delayed, and continues to delay the judging of the student contest. While we are confident that we can eventually complete the process, publication of all the winning poems on our website may no longer be possible. We do hope to publish some of them. We will notify all winners as soon as we are able to. While the process for entering next year's contest may change, the categories will be similar or the same. In late 2020, students will be able to enter the 2021 contest in the individual prize categories as indicated below. Poems must be entered in the appropriate grade level category, and where there are two or more categories for which a student is eligible, the same poem cannot be entered more than once. Entry rules apply to all categories. Any prize winners’ poems that we publish will appear only after the winners have been notified and we have been granted permission to do so.

Important notice: There are no fees for students to enter the contest. Students are not required to be Poetry Society members to enter, though we welcome any and all to join at a reduced membership rate.

RULES

The 2021 contest will open for business in Nov. 2020. Entries will be accepted until January 19th 2021.

All entries must be in English, original and unpublished. Author retains copyright.

Poems that have previously won an award in a Poetry Society of VA contest are not eligible for entry. Poems submitted to the Poetry VA Student Contest cannot be submitted to the Poetry VA Adult Contest.

All poems are presented anonymously to the judges.

Entrants may only enter one poem per category, and a specific poem may only be entered in one category.

By entering your poem you are affirming that the work is your original creation.

With the appropriate permissions, and after due notification, we hope to publish first, second, and third prize winners’ poems on our website, together with the names of the poet, the school, and teacher.

DEADLINE:

The 2021 contest will accept entries from a date to be announced in November 2020, until midnight on January 19th, 2021.
