2022 Poetry Society of Virginia Student Contest Winners Announced

Rules and Categories
CONTESTS ARE NOW CLOSED. WE'D LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUBMISSIONS

All entries must be in English, typed, unpublished, original, and not scheduled for publication before May 2021.

All poems are presented anonymously to the judges.

Submit one copy of each poem with no identifying information. Enter the category by using the drop-down box through Submittable. Only one poem may be submitted per category, but students may qualify to enter more than one category, depending on their age.

Teachers are encouraged to join PSV through our website: poetrysocietyofvirginia.org.
Classroom membership is only $10. Students enter free.

All entries not in compliance with category specifications or age range may be disqualified.

Winning poems may be read and honored in person or on Zoom at our annual awards ceremony in spring 2022.

First place poems will be published on the PSV website and annual journal. SUBMISSION TO THE CONTEST PRESUMES PERMISSION BY PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN TO PUBLISH UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTATED.

All first, second, and third place winning poems and poets will receive a certificate and cash prize, according to amounts specified in their categories.
CATEGORIES
Free to enter. Categories #1-6 are open to any student locally or internationally. Poems must be 35 lines or fewer. One entry per student in each eligible category. Submit online: poetrysocietyofvirginia.submittable.com.
1. Poems by students in grades 3-4.
35 line maximum. Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
2. Poems by students in grades 5-6.
35 line maximum. Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
3. Poems by students in grades 7-8.
35 line maximum. Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
4. Poems by students in grades 9-10.
35 line maximum. Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
5. Poems by students in grades 11-12.
35 line maximum. Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
6. Jenkins Prize, poems by students in grades 9-10.
Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
7. The Poetry Society Prize, FOR VIRGINIA STUDENTS ONLY, in grades 6-8.
Prizes: 1st, 2nd 3rd: $25, $15; $10.
8. The Virginia Student Prize FOR VIRGINIA STUDENTS ONLY, in grades 9-12.
Awards $50, $30, $20.
9. Spoken Word: FOR VIRGINIA STUDENTS ONLY, 3 min. limit
Prizes: 1st prize only: $25.
Spoken word poets must meet the January 19th Submittable deadline by either submitting the text of their poem (some deviation acceptable during performance) or uploading a video recording of their spoken word performance in MP4 file format. A Zoom event will be announced on the website (poetrysocietyofvirginia.org), on our Facebook page (facebook.com/PoetryVA) and on Instagram (instagram.com/posocva).
